Smallville Finale

Smallville is now just four episodes away from being over. The show is now at a really interesting point; Clark is genuinely on the cusp of becoming Superman. And, after 10 seasons, it's about time!

I intend this post to be a call-to-arms for any comic book fans to start watching now even if you haven't watched before. Like him or not, Superman is the biggest comic book superhero of all time. And this is the most exciting point in Superman's story, where everything comes together. You may think that it's too late to jump in if you're not a regular viewer, but this really isn't the case. The purpose of this post is to bring you up to speed on what's been happening so far in seasons 1-10 of Smallville, and to prepare you for the 4 episodes leading to the grand finale.

I'll also Chip in my two cents on what I'd like to see in the Smallville Finale.

What's Been Going on Recently?

Smallville has basically become "Metropolis" over the last few seasons. Several well-known Superman landmarks have been reached bringing Clark to the verge of donning the Super-suit. I'd like to run through these briefly now.

Jonathan Died. OK, I know, SPOILER ALERT. But come on, what rock are you living under if you do not know that Clark's human father dies of a heart attack? What you may not know is what caused that attack. In season five of Smallville, a full (and fascinating) explanation of what gave Jonathan  his heart problem is given.

One very compelling reason to watch
Clark moved to Metropolis. In true Superman style, Clark has now moved to Metropolis and is working as a reporter at The Daily Planet.

The Justice League is Forming. One of Clark's biggest clues to where his destiny lies has been taking cues from his friends Oliver Queen (AKA Green Arrow), Bart Allen (The Flash), as well as Aquaman, Cyborg, Black Canary, Supergirl, Hawkman and Dr Fate. They even have a "Watchtower" base which they operate from now!

He has seen the Super-suit. Clarks father Jor-El has locked away a Super-suit reminiscent of the Brandon Routh "Superman Returns" design back in '06. Frozen in crystal back at the Fortress of Solitude, Clark simply needs to prove he is worthy of wearing it.

Smallville's Super-Suit

Clark has embraced crime fighting, dual identities, and has even donned the glasses! I know that's a long heading. I really wanted to convey in an explosive way that Clark is pretty much living the life of Superman, in all but three ways, which I will come onto in the final section of this post.

But to summarise the current state of play, Clark initially decided to begin crime-fighting in a black trench-coat with a t-shirt emblazoned with a silver "S". once he saw the actual Super-suit, he change this look to the quasi-costume you see here.

My personal view of this costume has changed over time; when I first saw it I thought it looked lame. but as time's gone on it has grown on me, and I do feel that it is a natural progression to the full-shabang in the Smallville finale.

Plus, when you compare this to the recently leaked wonder-woman outfit from the new TV series, we're lucky that Clark isn't wearing a cheap spandex jumpsuit.

What's Next? Season Finale Wish-list

I'll focus here on the three things that are left in order to make the show complete:

1) Donning The Suit
I'd really like this to take place early on in the episode. I have a feeling it won't as I think that Clark will battle the "final boss" (Darkseid) and only then will he have proved himself to Jor-El, which is a shame. I'd love to see the climactic encounter take place with Clark in the suit.

2) Flight
I'd ideally like to see Clark slowly learn to control his flight as he battles Darkseid, climaxing in him hovering triumphantly, before an onlooking crowd of Metropolis.

3)Using The Name
I think the rest writes itself, the onlooking crowd instinctively cheer the name. Or, you could go down the cheesy "look up in the sky!" route. I personally wouldn't mind either.

I'd love the final scene to be the one you see here. Reeves did it at the end of each Superman movie. Routh did it in 2006 to close Superman Returns. I want Welling to step up (or fly up) and take the torch by recreating this as the final ever scene of Smallville.
